Today, Joy Crookes, one of the fastest rising new British talents, has self-produced a cover of Kendrick Lamar’s YAH. & Element. The cover comes along with a brand-new tour announcement for October + November this year which will take Joy across the UK and Europe.

Melding together two of DAMN’s magnificent highlights, Joy’s hypnotic mini-medley is the first new music that she’s shared since her ‘Perception’ EP released earlier this summer. It comes with the promise of more new music to follow, and serves as a vivid reminder of her unparalleled talent.

On covering Kendrick, Joy says –

“I was sat in my living room with my best friend and I was showing her this new synth keyboard thing I'd bought in Brighton that weekend. I just sat there and sang her famous songs while messing around on these keys - when we got to Kendrick she turned around and was like “shit, that was good - do that again”.

“Once I’d actually worked out the cover and chords, I realised how much the songs I merged related to my own life. Kendrick is probably one of my favourite lyricists of this generation, even the first line: “I’ve got so many theories and suspicions, I’m diagnosed with real people conditions, today is the day I follow my intuition, keep the family close, get money and fuck bitches” and the last chorus line “they won’t take me out my element” is LITERALLY how I try and live my life”.
